Earlier we reviewed the D-Link DIR-890L wireless router with tri-band functionality. However many users found it a bit overloaded. If you need a reliable Wi-Fi connection that can handle a heavy load of wireless connections, look at the ASUS RT-AC3200 Router.
As a home user, you get a fun-to-use Web interface, excellent features, connect to multiple internet sources and it has a VPN server. The VPN server is a great feature to have if you own a small business. The units sold at a costly price and packed with power.
What makes the RT-AC3200 stand out?
The Asus AC3200 offers you a tri-band, meaning you get one 2.4GHz and two 5GHz frequency bands. The 2.4GHz supports all 802.11n/g/b wireless users and tops at 600Mbps. While the two 5GHz access point supports 802.11ac/n/ wireless users and caps each 1300Mbps. What you get is a better bandwidth allocated to wireless devices for optimal speed.
Compared to the RT-AC87U the RT-3200 shares the same design and features. The difference is the AC3200 has a three-stream design while the RT-AC87U offers you a dual-band with quad-stream. The AC3200 has six antennas you can remove and replace if preferred.
On the back, it has four GB LAN ports and one GB WAN port. Further, you find the 2.0 USB port on the back and the 3.0 USB port placed on the front. This allows you to connect an external storage device with ease to the USB 3.0 port. On the front of the device, you have loads of status light and stick out for you to see them.
On the inside of the wireless router, Asus used powerful hardware such as the Broadcom BCM4709 dual-core 1GHz processor. The flash storage memory is 128MB and the DDR 3 system memory comprises 256MB. The setup process is easy and only needs a power outlet and a connection to your PC.
You’re greeted with a web-based wizard with systematic instructions to interface it with your wireless network. The Smart Connect features turned on as a default and works as a single network. Additionally, it connects users automatically to either frequency band depending on their wireless standard.
You can customize and manage the router with different settings.
The Asus RT-AC3200 has an interactive network map showing you all connected devices. You can interact with each user connected and sorted according to the connection method. Further, you have Dynamic DNS, WAN, and wireless settings. The downside is if you assign a user with a fixed IP address, it remembers the user by the MAC address.
Other important features are the AiProtection and Adaptive Quality of Service. With AiProtection, your entire home networks protected against malicious software. If a users been infected it stops it immediately from sending the virus to others.
With the Adaptive QoS, you can prioritize the bandwidth to certain types of traffic such as gaming, audio streaming and more. For real-time monitoring, you have the “apps analysis” and great to use to see who is abusing the connection. For connecting visitors, you have nine guest networks giving you three on each band. You can customize your home network name and change the password.
With the USB ports, you can connect external devices such as hard drives, USB printers, and cellular modems. Share data stored on the hard drive with a local printer and set up Time Machine backup. If you do own a small business, it has a built-in PPTP VPN to host up to 10 remote clients and can use one of LAN ports as a WAN port.
